Balrampur (Uttar Pradesh), May 27 (IANS) Two criminals were lynched by a group of locals here when they tried to sneak into a house, police said Friday.

The two men, in their mid-20s, are believed to be members of the notorious Kachha-Baniyan gang. They were beaten to death early Friday by the mob in Tulsipur area, police inspector C.P. Singh said.

“The two along with their four-five aides were caught by the villagers sneaking into the house of one Mahesh Srivastava. The duo along with their aides attacked the villagers with sticks, but could not overpower them,” Singh told reporters in Balrampur, some 300 km from Lucknow.

“The mob managed to catch the two, while their aides managed to escape. Thereafter, the villagers assaulted the two with iron rods and wooden sticks, and they later died on the spot,” he added.

Five villagers were also injured during the incident. While locals claim they killed the criminals in self-defence, police are investigating the matter, he said.
