Two AMRI officials sent to judicial custody

Kolkata, Dec 26 (IANS) A court Monday sent two officials of the AMRI hospital where a fire claimed 94 lives to judicial custody till Jan 5. Six of its directors are behind bars in connection with Dec 9 tragedy.

The court of chief judicial magistrate Alipore C.H. Karim ordered senior vice president S. Upadhyay and senior manager Sanjiv Pal to be sent to judicial custody, said Sujoy Chakrabarty, a counsel for the hospital.

The two, arrested Dec 13, were presented before the court after their police custody expired Monday.

Public prosecutor Rajdeep Mazumdar claimed that Pal had informed the police of his desire to make a statement before a magistrate. But he declined to make the statement.

Six of the hospital directors were sent to judicial custody Dec 23 while the seventh director, R.S. Agarwal, has been kept under arrest at the state run SSKM hospital.

All the accused will be presented before the court Jan 5.
