Turkey mulls buffer zone on Syrian border
June 11th, 2011 - 7:13 pm ICT by IANSAnkara, June 11 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Turkey is pondering the possibility of setting up a buffer zone along its border with Syria to contain the increasing influx of refugees from the restive country, Turkish media said Saturday.
Over 2,700 refugees crossed into Turkey’s Hatay province early Friday; a further influx of refugees is expected, Turkish official said. Over 100 Syrians are receiving treatment in several Turkish hospitals in Hatay.
Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has reiterated several times that Turkey would keep its gates open to Syrian refugees.
Human rights groups say more than 1,000 civilians have been killed since an uprising against the 41-year rule of Syrian President Bashar Assad began in March.
