Truck mows four kids, one killed in police firing
September 14th, 2011 - 10:26 pm ICT by IANSLucknow, Sep 14 (IANS) At least 13 policemen, including a senior officer, were injured when a mob in Uttar Pradesh’s Kannauj district Wednesday attacked them during a protest over the death of four children who were mowed down by a truck. Police later resorted to firing to disperse the mobs, killing a youth.
The four children — Shyamji, Dhruv, Tanu and Sumit — were Wednesday morning crushed to death by the speeding truck in Gurshaiganj town. Demanding the arrest of the truck driver, locals pelted stones at the police, vandalised a police station and torched many vehicles.
“Agitated over the death of the children, around 1,000 locals torched a fire brigade, a police jeep, a roadways bus and several trucks,” Deputy Superintendent of Police S.P. Mishra told reporters in Kannauj, some 250 km from Lucknow.
“Locals even resorted to arson at a police station and attacked the officials present there. During the attack, 13 policemen, including the Superintendent of Police, were injured,” he added.
According to Special Director General of Police Brij Lal, police resorted to firing in “self-defence” that claimed the life of a youth, Vipin.
