Troubled for dowry, woman commits suicide

New Delhi, Aug 4 (IANS) Beaten and assaulted for not bringing dowry, a 24-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself in the city, Police said Monday. Deepa locked herself inside a room in her house in Timarpur area in north Delhi late Sunday. When her husband Girish Kumar tried to call her, she did not respond, the police said.

Kumar immediately made a call to Deepa’s parents, who stay a few miles away from their house.

“After reaching there, they broke open the door and found Deepa hanging. They brought down the body and called the police,” a police officer said.

Deepa was married to Kumar four years back.

The victim’s parents have registered a complaint against Kumar, his father and brother for demanding dowry and compelling Deepa to commit suicide.

“They regularly used to trouble and beat Deepa for not bringing dowry,” the complaint said.

“A magisterial inquiry has been ordered into the matter and the accused will be arrested soon,” the officer said.
