Troopers arrested for harassing, assaulting girl students
February 6th, 2011 - 8:37 pm ICT by IANSKolkata, Feb 6 (IANS) Two troopers of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) were arrested in West Bengal’s Birbhum district Sunday for allegedly assaulting two girl students of Visva-Bharati University, police said.”Acting on a specific complaint, we have arrested two CISF jawans - Atul Singha Bharati and Amar Kumar. Both of them are posted in Eastern Coal Limited’s (ECL) office in Durgapur and came to visit Visva-Bharati campus in Santiniketan,” said Bolpur sub-divisional police officer Biswajit Mahato.
According to university sources, the troopers, riding a motorcycle, started chasing two girl students in front of ‘Upasana Griha’ glass temple.
Panicking, the students went towards the Vidya Bhavan (arts department) office, where the troopers, still following them, used abusive language at them. One of the girl somehow managed to snatch the key of their motorbike and the troopers then allegedly used force to take it back.
Later, police were informed about the matter, the Visva-Bharati sources said.
The two troopers are residents of Bihar and will be produced before the court Monday, police said.
Visva-Bharati was founded by Noble laureate Rabindranath Tagore in Santiniketan in the 1920s.
