Trinamool alleges cash bribes, CPI-M in denial (Lead)
April 22nd, 2011 - 8:58 pm ICT by IANSBolpur/Kolkata, April 22 (IANS) The Trinamool Congress has complained to the Election Commission against a Marxist leader who was allegedly caught distributing money to voters ahead of the second phase of the West Bengal assembly elections, an official said Friday.
“Trinamool leaders claimed that CPI-M MP Ramchandra Dome was allegedly distributing money among the voters. We have asked the district magistrate to investigate the matter,” Deputy Election Commissioner Vinod Kumar Zutshi said. Dome denied the allegation.
“Some villagers have privately admitted to taking the money,” an official said. “If the allegation is found to be true, it will be a case of bribery.”
According to police, Dome and 10-12 party supporters went to Sainthia where Trinamool supporters surrounded him for distributing money among the villagers.
Khurshid Miya, a villager, told police that Dome paid him cash and showed the police a Rs.500 note, a Trinamool leader said.
Denying the allegation, Dome said: “The CPI-M does not believe in money politics. I came to chalk out last minute plans before Saturday’s polling.”
