Tribal women allege sexual assault by Tamil Nadu cops

Chennai, Nov 26 (IANS) Tamil Nadu Police Saturday ordered a probe into a complaint of sexual assault filed against their personnel by four tribal women of the Irula community in the state’s Villupuram district, police said.

“We have received a complaint from a woman named Lakshmi alleging sexual assault by police officials in Thirukoilur station. We are enquiring into the complaint,” a police official told IANS.

He said a police team picked up six men Nov 22 on information about a gang involved in house breaking and other crimes.

The women alleged that the police subsequently also picked up the four women, relatives of the men, for inquiry.

According to Villupuram police, one of the women Saturday complained of sexual assault and the matter is being enquired into.

The official said as the complaint is against the police officials, the matter will be forwarded to the district collector for action in the case.
