Train mows down four children in Punjab
May 6th, 2011 - 5:54 pm ICT by IANSLalru (Punjab), May 6 (IANS) Four children, who were picking polythene bags from a railway bridge, were crushed by a speeding train in this Punjab town Friday, police said.
“The accident occurred on a railway bridge in Lalru. Six children, all rag pickers, were collecting polythene bags on the track. When the train came, they were in the middle of the bridge. Two of them managed to jump, while four were crushed under the train’s wheels,” said a police official here.
“We have sent the bodies to the civil hospital for post-mortem examination. The dead were residents of nearby slum area,” he said.
The train was coming from Ambala to Chandigarh. The ages of the victims were not known.
Lalru, in Mohali district of Punjab, is 20 km from capital Chandigarh.
