Traffic restored near Metro accident site
July 17th, 2009 - 6:57 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, July 17 (IANS) Traffic was restored Friday around a Delhi Metro construction site in south Delhi’s Zamrudpur area where an accident killed six people five days ago.
According to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), two-way traffic movement on the road connecting the Nehru Place commercial district to Moolchand Hospital was opened Friday morning.
DMRC spokesperson Anuj Dayal said in a statement: “Two lanes each (approximately seven metres) are open for to-and-fro traffic. Traffic marshals have been posted to guide vehicles.”
Traffic from Moolchand towards Nehru Place was opened Tuesday.
Six workers were killed and 15 others injured when an elevated section of the Delhi Metro track under construction at Zamrudpur collapsed early Sunday morning.
In another accident at the same spot the following day, six more people were injured when three huge cranes, being used to remove a steel girder that had got inclined, suddenly toppled over. A row of adjoining shops was also destroyed by the falling cranes.
According to Dayal, the site clearing operation is on and the 72-metre-long damaged steel launching girder has been almost removed from the site.
A 350-tonne crane and two 100-tonne cranes are at the site to remove debris.
