Top TMVP member, driver shot dead

Colombo, Nov 14 (IANS) A top member of the breakaway Tamil Tigers group was shot dead Friday along with his driver by unidentified men on the outskirts of Colombo, military sources said.According to military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara, the victims included a secretary to Eastern Province Chief Minister Sivanesadurai Chandrakanthan alias Pillaiyan.

The killing took place at Athurugiriya, about 15 km east of Colombo, while the victim was travelling in a car with his driver.

Both the Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Puligal (TMVP) member, who was not identified by name, and his driver were reportedly found dead inside the car.

Meanwhile, two more TMVP activists were killed in another attack in the eastern district of Batticaloa Thursday night.

These two TMVP members were killed when gunmen fired at the group’s political office at Karadiyanaru.

The TMVP, a breakaway faction of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), has faced unceasing attacks in the eastern province, especially after its leader Vinayagamurthi Muralitharan alias Karuna Amman was named an MP by the Mahinda Rajapaksa government last month.

According to media reports, nearly 20 TMVP members have been killed in recent attacks.

The TMVP and LTTE are bitter rivals, and the police have blamed the Tamil Tigers for the killings.
