Top Punjab bureaucrat accused of domestic violence

Chandigarh, June 25 (IANS) A top Punjab bureaucrat was Wednesday accused by his estranged wife of beating her up at his official residence here, the police said. Shweta Verma, the estranged wife of senior Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer Anurag Verma, lodged a complaint at Sector 17 police station that he beat her at his residence in upscale sector-16 here.

She alleged that her husband was in the habit of beating her up for the last many years.

“We have received the complaint and are investigating the same,” station house officer Kulwant Singh said.

The couple have been separated for over one year. They have been married for 13 years and have a 10-year-old son.

Anurag is at present serving as managing director of the Punjab State Industrial dDvelopment Agency (PSIDC).

He told reporters later that his wife had cooked up the assault case against him. He said she was trying to blackmail him as their divorce case was pending before a court here.
