Top French honour for Mushirul Hasan
July 13th, 2010 - 8:45 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, July 13 (IANS) Eminent historian Mushirul Hasan, director general of National Archives of India, will be conferred the top French honour, Order of Palmes Académiques, here Wednesday for his contribution to education.
The honour will be conferred by French Ambassador Jérôme Bonnafont on the occasion of the country’s National Day.
Vinay Kumar Tewari, former vice-chancellor of Uttarakhand Technical University, will also be given the honour.
Hasan, a former vice chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, has embarked on a mammoth exercise to digitise rare documents and restore old ones at the National Archives.
He is seeking to expand the collection of historical papers at the archives and recently appealed to private collectors for their collections.
Hasan has published several scholarly books, edited many works on Islam in India, and authored numerous articles on post-independence India.
He has also been part of government-sponsored delegations sent on international missions. Hasan has delivered lectures at countless international conferences, and taught in various international universities and institutions, including in Paris.
During his tenure as vice chancellor, he actively promoted academic exchanges between India and France. The Islamic centre entered into several MoUs with French institutions under Hasan’s leadership.
Among various honours, Hasan was conferred the Padma Shri in 2007.
Vinay Kumar Tewari has been instrumental in setting up many collaborative projects between France and India.
