Toll in Ukrainian mine accidents climbs to 37
July 31st, 2011 - 6:25 pm ICT by IANSKiev, July 31 (IANS) The toll in two mine accidents in Ukraine has risen to 37, the Ukrainian emergencies ministry Sunday said.
An explosion occurred at the Suhodolskaya-Vostochnaya mine in the Luhansk region in the wee hours of Friday when 28 miners were working underground, Xinhua reported.
“The toll in the blast has climbed to 26. The search and rescue operation is over,” authorities said.
In another mine accident, at least 11 workers died Friday in the neighbouring Donetsk region when an elevator, used to transport miners and equipment, collapsed at the Bazhanov mine.
Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych announced a day of mourning Sunday and expressed his condolences to victims’ kin.
The president has also ordered a commission to investigate the causes of the two accidents.
