Today Bhaiya Dooj being celebrated

- The festival of Bhaiya Dooj is being celebrated on Monday with traditional joy and enthusiasm across the country. Sisters pray for longer life of their brothers on the occasion.The Bhaiya Dooj is celebrated from epic time as the legend, on the auspicious day of Bhai Dooj Lord Krishna, after slaying the Narakasura demon, goes to his sister Subhadra.She welcomes her brother with the lamp, sweets, flowers, etc and put the holy protective tilak on his forehead. Indian people celebrate the festival of Bhai Dooj with great enthusiasm and fervor.
Various states in India has its own ritual way In Bengal the festival is called ‘Bhai Phota’, which is performed by the sister,religiously fasts until she applies a ‘phota’ or mark with sandal wood paste on her brother’s forehead, offers him sweets and gifts and prays for his long and healthy life. Diyas and incense sticks are an integral part of the ceremony. An aarti is also performed.
Punjab,known as tikka when sisters make a paste with saffron and rice and place an auspicious mark on their brother’s foreheads as a symbolic gesture to ward off all harm.
In another North India state UP, the sister applying a tilak of roli and rice on her brother’s forehead and praying him with an aarti to shed off all the evil effects, Marathi-speaking communities and in Nepal, people know this festival by the name of “Bhai-Tika”.
