Timeline of Aman Kachru ragged-to-death case
November 11th, 2010 - 2:41 pm ICT by IANSDharamsala, Nov 11 (IANS) The following is the timeline of the Aman Kachru ragged-to-death case in the Rajendra Prasad Medical College and Hospital at Tanda town in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh:
2009
March 7: First-year students of the college subjected to intense physical ragging by their seniors in the early hours.
March 8: Aman Kachru succumbs to his ragging injuries around 7 p.m.
March 10: Four students - Ajay Verma, Naveen Verma, Abhinav Verma and Mukul Sharma - arrested under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code.
March 14: Hundreds of people hold candle-light vigils in New Delhi and Tanda town to demand justice for Aman.
March 16: The Supreme Court issues show-cause notice for contempt proceedings against the college principal and the registrar and seeks explanations from the state.
March 18: A three-member team of the Medical Council of India reaches the college to probe into the incident.
March 28: The government makes public the magisterial inquiry into Aman’s death, the report says the student succumbed to his injuries caused during ragging.
March 30: Suresh Sankhyan, the principal at the time of the incident, suspended on the directions of the apex court.
April 9: A three-member sub-committee, appointed by the Raghavan Committee, constituted earlier by the Supreme Court, entrusted to monitor the measures to prevent ragging in higher educational institutions, reaches the college to inquire about Aman’s death.
Aug 13: A fast-track court in Dharamsala frames murder charges against the four accused students.
Aug 17: The state assembly passes Himachal Pradesh Educational Institutions (Prohibition of Ragging) Act, 2009, making ragging a cognisable and non-bailable offence.
Aug 22: Trial begins in the court.
2010
July 17: After 16 months in custody, the trial court grants bail to the accused.
July 22: The Himachal Pradesh High Court takes suo motu cognisance of the bail granted.
July 28: The high court cancels the bail and directs the accused to surrender to trial court next day.
Aug 2: The court resumes the trial.
Aug 28: Aman’s father Rajendra Kachru deposes before the court for the first time.
Oct 28: The court begins final hearing.
Oct 30: The court reserves its judgment for Nov 11.
Nov 11: The court convicts all the four accused on charges of murder of Aman Kachru.
