New Delhi, March 21 (IANS) Chanting “We want freedom”, around 20 Tibetans stormed the Chinese embassy here Friday after catching the police unaware and waved Tibetan flags inside the compound before being overpowered. A group of Tibetans reached the venue in the evening and quickly scaled the boundary wall at the less guarded visa section, which faces the Sri Lankan high commission, witnesses said.

Before the Delhi Police realised what was happening, several young Tibetans managed to get into the embassy complex. In the process, some suffered cuts when they jumped over the barbed fence.

At least three or four Tibetan youths ran around on the embassy lawn shouting slogans before the security personnel caught up with them.

Policemen outside the embassy scuffled with more Tibetan protestors, both women and men. The police arrested over 20 protestors.

Friday’s dramatic protest came hours after Nancy Pelosi, the US House of Representatives speaker, met the Dalai Lama at Dharamsala and expressed support for the Tibetan spiritual leader.
