Three trapped in Goa mining accident
June 18th, 2011 - 2:03 am ICT by IANSPanaji, June 18 (IANS) Three people are feared trapped under debris in a major mining accident in Sanvordem town, 50 km from here late Friday.
A spokesperson for the Goa-based Sociedade Fomento mining company said that three people have been trapped under the debris after a “tailing stack” of the open cast iron ore mine collapsed, allegedly due to the heavy monsoon downpour.
The accident occurred around 8.30 p.m. He added that two mining workers and a shift engineer were trapped. However, unofficial reports said nearly 10 people were trapped.
“The mine’s tailing stack wall contains aluminium and silica impurities, which are extracted during the operations,” he said.
A senior police official said that the chances of rescuing the trapped people were grim.
“The rains and the accumulated water is making rescue effort difficult. We are not sure whether the trapped persons are alive at the moment,” the police official said.
