Three students end their lives in Maharashtra (Second Lead)
January 7th, 2010 - 1:10 am ICT by IANSMumbai, Jan 6 (IANS) Two days after Mumbai was rocked by three student suicides, three girls ended their lives in Maharashtra Wednesday. While one was studying in Class 9, the other was an engineering student who had failed in several subjects and the third was a 17-year-old.
The Class 9 student, 14-year-old Rupali Shinde committed suicide by hanging herself at her Thane home here Wednesday evening, police said. She was a student of the Maharashtra High School in the city.
According to police, Rupali took the extreme step when her parents were not at home. The motive behind the incident is being investigated.
Close on the heels of Rupali’s death, 17-year-old Reshma Dhotre killed herself at her Mulund home in northeast Mumbai Wednesday evening, police said. She was a Class 11 student.
The motive behind the suicide is not known yet but according to preliminary information, Reshma was reportedly depressed following the death of a cousin Tuesday. She had also quarrelled with her mother in the afternoon.
In the morning, Dhanashree Patil, a former student of Amritvahini College of Engineering in Sangamner (Ahmednagar) ended her life in Nashik, according to principal G.J. Vikhe-Patil.
The suicide was discovered early Wednesday at her home in Nashik. Upon getting the information from some friends, Vikhe-Patil immediately called up her parents who are presently in Thiruvananthapuram.
Dhanashree had failed in several subjects in her final year mechanical engineering examinations last year.
As per the college and university rules, she was required to first clear the backlog of the subjects in which had failed to be re-admitted to the institution to pursue her engineering studies further, he explained.
Two days ago, three Mumbai students committed suicide within 24 hours, shocking the country’s commercial capital.
They included a 20-year-old first year MBBS student, Bhajanpreet Bhullar of D.Y. Patil College (Navi Mumbai) and a Class 7 student, 13-year-old Sushant Patil who hanged himself in the toilet of Shardashram Boys High School (Dadar).
An 11-year-old aspiring dancer, Neha Sawant hanged herself in her Dombivli (Thane) home after her parents refused her permission to pursue a dancing career.
