The three under-trials — Ganapati Singh, Balbir Ram and Monirul — along with six others were being taken to Barasat court in North 24 Parganas adjoining Kolkata, when the accident gave them an opportunity to flee, police sources said.
The three have charges of dacoity and murder against them.
Police said investigation is on to find out whether the escape was pre-planned.
The six others, who were injured, besides the driver of the prison van were taken to the Barasat hospital.
