Three Orissa cops suspended for custodial death
April 6th, 2010 - 2:28 pm ICT by IANSBhubaneswar, April 6 (IANS) Three police officials, including the head of a police station, were suspended Tuesday for the death of a man in police custody in Orissa’s Keonjhar district.
Abhiram Nayak, 45, was arrested from Chalia Nala village Monday on charges of extortion and was found hanging during a power cut.
“Nayak hanged himself inside the police station during a power cut,” sub-divisional police officer A.K. Das said.
“He was rushed to the nearest hospital but died on the way,” he said.
The police officials were suspended after an irate mob blaming the cops for the death attacked them and ransacked the police station, Das added.
