Paonta Sahib (Himachal Pradesh), March 24 (IANS) Violent protests erupted Thursday here in Himachal Pradesh after three young men were killed in a clash between two communities, police said. Ten people were arrested.

A mob went on a rampage, torching and damaging vehicles, and blocking the Nahan-Dehradun highway for several hours.

The administration imposed prohibitory orders. Police used bamboos to disperse crowds which tried to enter a Balmiki colony in Heerpur village, on Paonta Sahib’s outskirts, sub-divisional magistrate Manmohan Sharma told IANS.

The relatives of the men who were allegedly stabbed to death during Hola Mohalla refused to take the bodies for cremation.

Shops and businesses in Paonta Sahib of Sirmaur district were closed in protest. All Balmiki families — whose men were allegedly involved in the murders — fled to neighbouring Uttarakhand.
