Ghaziabad, Feb 12 (IANS) A marriage procession turned into mayhem when three people were shot dead in a clash between Brahmins and Dalits in a Ghaziabad locality Thursday evening. Police and Provincial Armed Constabulary forces have been deployed to maintain communal harmony, police said.
The clash took place in Dasna area of Masuri police station.

According to police, a group of Dalits was taking out a marriage procession through the Brahmin-dominated Nayphal locality at around 6 p.m. The young Dalit boys in the procession were dancing in high spirits when some bystanders taunted them. Angered at the remarks, the boys whipped out pistols from their pockets and in a fit of rage opened fire, killing two Brahmin men on the spot.

In retaliatory action, the Brahmins opened fire, killing a Dalit man.

The police have surrounded the locality and barred entry and exit points. The administration has also cut the electricity supply to the village to prevent any untoward incident.

Senior police and administration officials have reached the site.

“Arrests would be made soon,” Senior Superintendent of Police Akhil Kumar said.
