A police spokesperson said heavily armed militants attacked a security convoy near Mahur in North Cachar Hills district, about 290 km south of Assam’s main city of Guwahati.
“A security convoy of two vehicles was attacked by militants from atop a hill with automatic weapons in which two civilians and a police commando were killed,” the official said.
Two more civilians accompanying the convoy were injured in the attack.
“We are not sure about the identity of the militant group involved in the ambush,” the official said.
The injured were shifted to a local hospital.
The area is a stronghold of the Isak-Muivah faction of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-IM). North Cachar Hills district adjoins Nagaland.
Earlier the district was dominated by the Dima Haolam Daogah (DHD) but the group in September surrendered after entering into a ceasefire with the government.
