Three killed after falling down manhole

New Delhi, Nov 19 (IANS) Three people were killed and another was injured after falling into a manhole outside Anand Vihar railway station in east Delhi, police said Saturday.

“They died after they inhaled poisonous gas fumes from the underlying sewer,” a police official said.

According to police, the incident took place around 9 a.m. near the railway station when a man fell into the manhole, and three men fell in while trying to rescue him.

Of the three dead, two have been identified as Dadda and Bhandari. The fourth victim, who is undergoing treatment at Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital, has been identified as Sonu, a resident of Tahirpur Colony near station,” said the official.

According to witnesses, a sweeper fell into the manhole while cleaning the area. Another person standing nearby rushed to his help, but also fell inside. Two others also rushed to rescue them, but also fell in.

“A Quick Reaction Team (QRT) rushed to the spot and pulled them out of the manhole. One of the QRT personnel identified as Ramesh was also injured during the rescue operation,” the officer told.

All of them were taken to LBS Hospital where three victims were declared dead.
