Three injured as Maoists target former Jharkhand minister
December 16th, 2009 - 7:20 pm ICT by IANSRanchi, Dec 16 (IANS) Three people were injured as Maoists targeted former Jharkhand minister and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) legislator Girinath Singh’s escort by triggering a landmine in Garhwa district, police said Wednesday.
“RJD MLA (member of legislative assembly) Girinath Singh was on election campaign when the blast took place. Two security personnel and a driver were injured. Girinath Singh is safe,” Jharkhand police spokesperson V.H. Deshmukh told IANS.
Singh’s vehicle passed the landmine but the blast hit the escort vehicle, he said. The incident took place near Oraiya village, around 140 kim from here.
Singh is seeking re-election for the fourth time from Garhwa assembly constituency which goes to polls in the fifth phase Friday.
The five-phased state assembly elections end Dec 18 and the counting of votes takes place Dec 23.
