New Delhi, March 8 (IANS) A man, his son and his daughter-in-law have been arrested for stealing vehicles they hired after drugging the drivers, police said Tuesday.

The trio, identified as Meharban, 50, his son Ishrat Ali, 25, and Ishrat’s wife Shahida, 25, were arrested in east Delhi after police received information that they would be visiting the area Monday.

“The three, residents of Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar town, used to come to Delhi in a hired vehicle and stay overnight in a hotel on fake names and addresses. There they used to mix sedative ‘Nitrovate’ in an alcoholic or soft drink or milk and give it to the driver. Then they used to check out from the hotel and decamp with the vehicle,” Deputy Commissioner of Police Ashok Chand said.

“Meharban is also involved in a murder case in Dehradun where he shot dead Niraj Goyal due to personal enmity. Since then he is absconding,” he added.

Five cases of drugging drivers and then stealing vehicles have been solved with their arrest, police said.

Police also seized the car they were travelling in.
