State Bank of India New Delhi, May 22 (IANS) Three people have been arrested from various places in Delhi and elsewhere for fraudulently withdrawing money from banks by forging cheques, police said Sunday.

Kundan Bharti, 26, Naseeb Singh, 23, and Ravi Verma, 26, were arrested separately after a complaint by Hazari Singh that Rs.2.9 lakh had been withdrawn from his savings account in State Bank of India, Delhi University branch in north Delhi, through forged cheques.

Naseeb Singh was arrested Saturday when he came to the cash counter of the bank and presented a forged cheque to withdraw Rs.5 lakh from the account of the complainant.

“After arresting Singh, police arrested his accomplice Kundan Bharti from Uttam Nagar on the same day. Ravi Verma was arrested later from Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh,” said a police officer.

Police have recovered Rs.2.12 lakh and a cheque book from Bharti and Rs.40,000 from Verma.

Bharti, who was the mastermind of this gang, during his service in an insurance company used to collect copies of cheques that were submitted by customers for insurance purpose. He used to select photocopies of cheques on which the signatures of the customer were simple and used them for forgery.
