Three held for fake caste certificate racket
June 25th, 2011 - 8:13 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, June 25 (IANS) Three people were arrested for supplying fake caste certificates to students for admission to Delhi University colleges, police said Sunday.
“Himanshu Gupta, 26, the mastermind behind the racket, was arrested on Thursday from North Campus of the university. Two of his associates Vikas and Ketan Gupta, both aged 24, were arrested from south Delhi,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Ashok Chand.
“Two cars, 12 admission forms along with forged caste certificates and Rs.5 lakh in cash were recovered,” he added.
Himanshu Gupta was involved in the fake caste certificate racket since 2008, police said.
“Himanshu Gupta revealed that he guaranteed admission to renowned colleges in Delhi University by providing forged caste certificates. He took an amount of Rs.3-5 lakh from students,” Chand said.
In the academic session 2010-11, fake certificates were made from land revenue office in Mehrauli with the help of Ketan Gupta.
“Ketan Gupta who was data entry operator in the certificate section also uploaded the students’ name on the official website of the Delhi government, so if anybody checked the authenticity of the caste certificate issued, the certificate holders’ name would be there on the official website,” Chand said.
Himanshu Gupta revealed that students got admission on the basis of forged certificates in eight Delhi University colleges including Shri Ram College of Commerce, Kamla Nehru College and Sri Venkateswara College.
After their arrest, police recovered a forged caste certificate of a girl, an admission form of Hans Raj College and a bank draft in the name of Hans Raj College.
“We arrested the gang before they could submit a forged caste certificate to get the girl admitted to Hans Raj College,” Chand added.
