Kolkata, Jan 16 (IANS) The West Bengal government Monday said three farmers committed suicide in the state but these were not because of debt.
“As per the primary report by district officials, it is learnt no suicide by farmers has taken place because of their inability to pay back their loans. However, it is learnt that three farmers have committed suicide but their death has not been because of debts or the credit they had taken,” said Agriculture Minister Rabindranath Bhattacharya here.
“It is a matter to be investigated and we have issued the necessary orders,” said Bhattacharya. He did not give details about where the suicides occurred.
The opposition Communist Party of India-Marxist has accused the government of failing to provide minimum support price to farmers in Burdwan.
Even the Congress, which is a constituent of the Mamata Banerjee-led government in the state, has repeatedly alleged that farmers were not getting minimum support prices. Party cadres recently staged demonstrations in various districts.
