January 21st, 2010 - 12:05 am ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Jan 20 (IANS) Two more mentally challenged inmates in a state-run observation home here died Wednesday, taking the number of deaths there to three in two days, a police official said. The Delhi government has ordered a probe.
“Two deaths were reported Wednesday from the Asha Kiran observation home in Rohini area. One death was reported Tuesday,” a police official said.
The police official said Sachin, 13, Usha, 22, and Tanav, 30, apparently died of natural causes.
Delhi’s Social Welfare Minister Mangat Ram Singhal told IANS that the government has ordered an inquiry.
“The inquiry has been ordered so that the reason of the death can be established. I want to know if everything is okay at the place,” Singhal said.
The latest cases follow the death of 12 inmates in the observation home in December and early January. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) had Jan 12 issued a notice to Delhi Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta, seeking a detailed report into the cause of deaths at Asha Kiran home and also on its state of affairs.
