Kolkata, Sep 11 (IANS) Three people died and at least 40 were injured when a bus hit a roadside tree and fell into a canal Thursday in West Bengal’s Howrah district, police said.”Three people died on the spot and at least 40 were injured in the bus accident at Nischindrapur. The condition of 10 of the 40 injured is critical,” District Police Superintendent Neeraj Singh told reporters.
After hitting the tree, the bus fell into the nearby Nayanjuli canal near Siagore bridge. There were at least 60 passengers in the bus. Many were rescued by the police and local residents.
Singh said initial investigations show that the vehicle was being driven recklessly. “We are yet to find out if the driver has fled or is among the wounded people,” he added.
