Three cops killed in Maoist blast (Lead)

Bhubaneswar, Jan 5 (IANS) At least three policemen were killed and three others critically injured when Maoists blew up their vehicle in Odisha’s Kandhamal district Thursday, police said.

A concealed land-mine exploded when half-a-dozen police personnel, mostly constables, were on their way to a site where the rebels had triggered an explosion a day earlier.

The Thursday attack took place in a forested area near Srirampur village, about 380 km from here, Deputy Superintendent of Police G.C. Behera told IANS.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced a compensation of Rs.8 lakh to the kin of each of the deceased, besides an insurance claim of Rs.10 lakh, an official of the chief minister’s office here told IANS.

The injured have been moved to a hospital in Cuttack for better treatment and the government will bear the cost, he added.

Maoists are active in more than half of Odisha. Kandhamal is considered a Maoist bastion.
