Three Bodo militants arrested in Guwahati
October 21st, 2010 - 6:05 pm ICT by IANSGuwahati, Oct 21 (IANS) Three tribal separatists of the outlawed National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) were arrested Thursday in a raid by security forces from Assam’s main city of Guwahati, officials said.
A police spokesperson said the three NDFB militants were staying in rented accommodation for the past few weeks.
“The NDFB militants were in the city on a specific mission to carry out extortion from some business people. We got wind of their activities and raided the house,” a senior police official said.
The rebels had served an extortion demand of Rs.2 million to a businessman.
“We have found several demand notices from the rebels,” the official said.
The militants came from bases in adjoining Nagaland state to carry out extortions in the city.
“The NDFB is facing severe fund crunch and the only way they can survive now is by way of extortions, and hence they are desperate,” the official said.
