Noida, Oct 6 (IANS) A 32-year-old groom and his 11-year-old bride were about to married Monday evening when the Noida police arrived on the scene and arrested the man.The police arrested groom Sandeep Singh, his father and also the under-aged bride’s father. The girl too was taken to the police station for questioning.

Investigation officer N.D. Sharma said the bride’s elder sister was married some time back to Sandeep’s elder brother Raj Kumar. As her family was poor, her father wanted to marry her to Sandeep, who works as a driver with a tourism agency, so that she could lead a better life, he said.

Both families had agreed to the marriage. The wedding was scheduled at about 4 p.m. at a temple near the government school at Ghijor.

However, some neighbours were opposed to the wedding of a girl well below the legal age of marriage and informed the police.

“We reached the venue and after talking to local people, arrested Sandeep, his father Sultan Singh and the bride’s father Mahaveer. We also brought the girl to the police station for recording her statements in the case,” Sharma said.

“We are examining the case and this would definitely be registered at the Sector 24 police station,” he said.
