Kolkata, Feb 18 (IANS) Three people were arrested Wednesday for allegedly torturing their seven-year-old maid with a burning candle in a West Bengal town, the police said.
Geeta Karmakar worked at school teacher Sandip Chakraborty’s house at English Bazaar town in Malda district, about 350 km from here.

She was rushed to a hospital Tuesday with severe burn injuries all over her body after Chakraborty tortured her with a lit candle as she had broken the glasstop of a table, the police said.

“We have arrested Chakraborty, his wife Aparajita and his brother-in-law Biswanath Maitra on Wednesday against the FIR (first information report) filed by Geeta’s mother yesterday (Tuesday),” said a senior police officer of English Bazaar police station.

Lying on her bed at the hospital, Geeta said it was not the first time she was tortured like this.

“Whenever I failed to carry out my employer or his wife’s orders properly, they used to abuse me verbally, as well as beat me up. This time my employer burnt me with a burning candle, as I could not do a household chore satisfactorily,” Geeta said.

“Geeta’s mother also said Chakraborty threatened her not to seek police help in this case,” the police official said.
