Three African students held for soccer violence (Second Lead)
April 28th, 2011 - 12:48 am ICT by IANSJalandhar, April 27 (IANS) Three African students of a university here who had brutally thrashed and killed a Mizo student during a football match were arrested Wednesday, police said.
“We had registered an FIR (first information report) following the statement of the university’s security officer Surinder Khurana and arrested three persons here late evening,” Superintendent of Police K.S. Dhillon said here.
Two students, Ahmed Al-Nagni and Sayed Fesial, are from Tanzania, while the third, Hatin Indriss, hails from Sudan.
A friendly football match between students from Africa and Mizoram in the campus of Lovely Professional University (LPU) here turned deadly Tuesday when players of the two teams engaged in a brawl, resulting in the death of the Mizoram player, identified as Johnny F. Lalhmangaih.
Lalhmangaih, 22, was pursuing civil engineering from the LPU.
“It was a friendly match between Mizo and African students who study here at the Lovely Professional University. During the last five minutes, the African students got offended over a goal. They grabbed Johnny and started punching him,” Deputy Superintendent of Police Sandeep Sharma told IANS.
“They also hit him on his private parts. He was immediately taken to a hospital but was declared brought dead,” Sharma said in Jalandhar, about 150 km from Chandigarh.
The varsity’s deputy director Aman Mittal said: “This is a very unfortunate incident, but nothing was planned beforehand.”
Currently, over 250 foreign students from 16 countries are studying at the university. Of them, around 50 are from African countries.
Punjab’s first private university, Lovely Professional University is located on the Phagwara-Jalandhar National Highway and has over 24,000 students on its rolls.
