Thousands vow to fight for corruption-free Meghalaya
January 30th, 2012 - 9:26 pm ICT by IANSShillong, Jan 30 (IANS) Thousands Monday vowed to fight for a corruption-free Meghalaya at a rally held here.
The campaign by Team Ardent, named after Meghalaya legislator Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit, aims at educating people about electoral politics, the ills of corruption, rights and duties of citizens and role of lawmakers.
“We have resolved to continue to strive in our struggle for a corruption-free Meghalaya,” Basaiawmoit told the rally.
With a year left for the 2013 elections in Meghalaya, the rally resolved to make the coming year the beginning of an era of clean and transparent governance in the state.
Political instability appears to have become a permanent feature in Meghalaya, which has seen four governments since the March 2008 elections.
“We cannot provide clean and transparent governance without ensuring political stability. Therefore, we are going to educate our people about electoral politics and to elect right-thinking legislators,” Basaiawmoit said.
“Before you vote, ensure you have carefully analysed the candidates. Choose one who has a clean image with a good social standing,” he said.
More than 7,000 people have registered for the campaign held in various parts of Khasi-Jaintia Hills in eastern Meghalaya.
