Srinagar, March 21 (IANS) Nearly 100,000 Muslims gathered at the historic Hazratbal shrine in Jammu and Kashmir to celebrate Eid-e-Milad un Nabi, the birthday of Prophet Mohammad. Muslims from all over the state gathered here to have a glimpse of the Prophet’s sacred relic (a hair of the Prophet’s beard), which is housed inside the shrine and is displayed after prayers on the occasion of Eid.
“I have come from Baramulla town to have a glimpse of the holy relic and to offer prayers here,” said Abdul Gaffar Bhat, 72, who was among the sea of devotees gathered on the occasion.
“Ever since I grew up, I don’t remember having missed prayers at Hazratbal on Milad un Nabi,” he said.
For the entire night, thousands of Muslims offered ‘Durud’ (praises of the Prophet) at the shrine and prayed for atonement of their sins.
Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and patron of the National Conference Farooq Abdullah also offered Friday prayers at Hazratbal shrine. The imam of the shrine, Moulvi Bashir-ud-Din Farooqi, led the prayers.
Azad has been taking keen interest in the beautification of the shrine lawns, which wore a festive look on the occasion.
The celebrations will continue for the next seven days till Jumat-ul-Vida (last Friday) March 28.
