Thick fog envelops chilly Delhi, commuters hit
January 18th, 2012 - 3:11 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Jan 18 (IANS) Thick fog enveloped the capital Wednesday morning and commuters struggled to travel in reduced visibility with slow vehicular movement and disruption in trains and flights. People shivered as the minimum temperature fell to 5.6 degrees Celsius, a significant drop from 9.3 degrees the day before.
The met department forecast more foggy days ahead. “Thick fog will be seen in the coming two days. The skies will be slightly clear towards the afternoon,” an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official told IANS.
Humidity stood at 97 percent. The minimum temperature was a notch below the average for the season.
“The maximum temperature is likely to be around 14 degrees,” the official said. The maximum temperature dipped 6 degrees below the average Tuesday to 14 degrees.
While road commuters faced difficulties in the morning hours, trains and flight operations were also badly hit due to reduced visibility.
At 8.30 a.m., the dense fog reduced visibility to 200 metres, the Met office said.
A Northern Railways official said: “Over 45 trains have been cancelled due to thick fog. Around 20 trains are running late in the Northern Railways.”
