Arguably one of the greatest movies of all time, The Shawshank Redemption, the classic heart-rending tale of extreme endurance and eventual redemption, is all set to return in a brand new genre of creativity.
Come September, and noted writer Stephen King’s immortal creation, ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ makes a comeback in the United Kingdom, in a theatrical stage production, that premieres at West End’s Wydnham’s Theater. Needless to say, the idea of a stage adaptation of one of the most intense screen productions, has already generated it’s expected share of interest in the viewership community at large.
The original version, directed by Frank Darabont, was based on Stephen King’s 1982 novella, ‘Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption’ and was released in 1994. Till date, it remains a curious example of a movie that barely managed to scrape together enough box office collections to cover production costs, but which much later, came to be accepted as one of the finest movies ever made.
Nominated for 7 Academy awards, this American crime drama saw stellar performances from Tim Robbins as Andrew Dufresne aka Andy, and Morgan Freeman as Elis Boyd Redding aka Red as convicts in a fictitious penitentiary known as the Shawshank State Prison.
The movie deals with the trials and tribulations, the victimization and eventual emancipation of Robbins’ character in this period drama set in the late 1940’s. After it’s disappointing initial box office response that turned out to be a damp squib, encouragement started trickling in, in the form of positive critic reviews, and before long redemption followed for ‘The Shawshank Redemption.’
