Tension in Himachal village over inter-caste marriage
August 13th, 2010 - 10:38 pm ICT by IANSShimla, Aug 13 (IANS) Tension prevailed in a Himachal Pradesh village in Sirmaur district Friday over an inter-caste marriage, police said.
“Security has been intensified in Nariwala village near Paonta Sahib as the local villagers threatened the newly-wed couple with dire consequences,” Deputy Superintendent of Police Virender Thakur told IANS over the telephone.
He said the bridegroom alleged that the villagers tried to set him afire after dousing him with kerosene.
The couple got married more than a month back and they came back to the village Thursday evening.
Thakur said the agitated villagers also allegedly burnt the car of the bridegroom’s father.
Another police official said three people, who were also believed to be involved in the car burning case, have been taken into custody.
The village is some 200 km from Shimla.
