Tension after Maoists kill RSS leader in Chhattisgarh (Lead)
October 30th, 2009 - 8:32 pm ICT by IANSRaipur, Oct 30 (IANS) Tension was reported in Chhattisgarh’s restive Dantewada district Friday after Maoist militants killed a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leader and two of his relatives, police said.
“Guerrillas stormed into a village in Kikirpal under Sukma block and butchered three middle-aged people with sharp edged weapons,” S.L. Baghel, Dantewada’s additional superintendent of police, told IANS.
The attack site is about 450 km south of the state capital Raipur.
Local police officials said that tension had gripped the area after the news spread that deceased included Jaising Manjhi, an influential RSS leader while two other victims were his elder brother Pileshwar Manjhi and his nephew Libir Manjhi.
Police say that the RSS leader was also a teacher while his brother was the village secretary.
A police team has reached the village and will be doing their best to arrest the killers, Baghel added. He said that extra police were rushed to the village from Sukma in the evening to calm down the local people after the killings.
Dantewada is one of the five districts that form the 40,000 sq km Bastar region where since 2004, at least 1,500 people have been killed in the Maoist related violence.
