Telgi seeks reduced sentence, fine in fake stamp paper cases
November 17th, 2011 - 9:03 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Nov 17 (IANS) Abdul Karim Telgi, convicted in the multi-crore fake stamp paper racket, Thursday approached the Delhi High Court seeking reduction of his jail sentence and fine imposed on him in three different cases by a trial court here.
Languishing in Bangalore prison since April 2004, Telgi moved court saying he has already spent six years in jail and the court should take a lenient view and reduce his sentence.
He also submitted before the court that he will not be able to meet the lower court’s 2009 order fining him Rs.1.5 crore in three different cases as all his bank accounts have been seized by the investigating agency and he has been in jail for past several years.
Taking note of Telgi’s submission, Justice M.L. Mehta issued notice to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) seeking its reply by Jan 13, 2012.
The court was hearing three different appeals filed by Mumbai-based Telgi against the lower court’s order sentencing him to seven years rigorous imprisonment for illegally printing and distributing fake non-judicial stamp papers through various firms here during the period 1998-2003.
Meanwhile, Telgi sought bail on medical grounds filing a revision petition against the sessions court’s order upholding the magistrate’s order convicting and sentencing him in three cases registered in Defence Colony, Darya Ganj and Hauz Khaz police stations here.
Seeking bail for Telgi on medical grounds as he is an HIV patient, advocate R.M. Tufail submitted that his clint’s health condition is deteriorating day by day due to his illness, therefore the court should grant him bail adding that the Karnataka High Court has already granted him bail on medical grounds.
Telgi was awarded the jail terms with the fine after he pleaded guilty before the court on June 11, 2001 in the case of recovery of fake stamp papers with face value of Rs.8.35 lakh from Daryaganj here. Six other co-accused were also awarded differing jail terms with fine in the matter.
In April last year, the sessions court had dismissed their appeal upholding the magistrate’s order.
In December 2003, several FIRs were registered against Telgi and several others in various parts of the country for allegedly stealing government stamps worth around Rs.23 crore from a railway wagon between 1997 and 2000. Later these cases were transferred to CBI.
