Teenaged rape victim dies after immolating herself
February 7th, 2011 - 11:54 pm ICT by IANSJhansi (Uttar Pradesh), Feb 7 (IANS) A teenaged girl, who had set herself on fire here after allegedly being raped, died Monday in a hospital in this Uttar Pradesh city, police said.”The girl, aged around 17 years, succumbed to her multiple burns at the Jhansi Medical College. She had received nearly 100 percent burns,” district police chief Amit Chandra told reporters.
The girl, a native of Mauranipur town, was allegedly raped Saturday by a youth, while she had gone to work in the fields. The youth was later arrested.
According to police, the girl had set herself afire Sunday morning inside her house. After being treated at a primary health centre, the girl was referred to the Jhansi Medical College.
Jhansi is around 300 km from Lucknow.
