Team, not personal glory, to motivate Trott against India
July 14th, 2011 - 6:52 pm ICT by IANSLondon, July 14 (IANS) England batsman Jonathan Trott has said that team success rather than personal glory will motivate him in the forthcoming cricket series against India.
The South Africa-born cricketer has been in great form in Tests piling up 1,867 runs, including six centuries, from 21 matches at an average of over 62. In five out of the six matches in which he has reached three figures, England have gone on to win.
“I don’t know what my stats are. I don’t pay attention to them, I try and worry about how many Test series wins I can contribute to and be a part of. That is our goal as a team and the most important one as an individual and everyone in the team feels that way,” Trott was quoted as saying by The Mirror.
“I was thinking the other day that all the hundreds I’ve scored, we’ve won all the Tests I’ve scored them in - except the one in Brisbane where we managed to save the game.
“That is pleasing and contributing to winning Tests is what it is all about as an individual and contributing to the team’s success.”
Trott, who is England’s player of the year, said keeping an emotional lid on things will be the key against India.
“It will be very exciting playing India, who I haven’t played against yet,” added Trott. “And controlling the emotions of the occasion. I’d like to think I can keep this form going and producing the runs I have. There is no reason why not. There is no reason why you can’t continue. But like life, cricket is similar. There are lots of ups and downs and it’s how you deal with those and bounce back.
“Form is something that is very precious and you’ve got to look after it and the importance of maintaining your work ethic, your commitment to the side and to your position and what your role is. My job at No.3 in the England team is to bat as long as possible and get the most runs,” he said.
