New Delhi, Sep 4 (IANS) Congratulating the teachers who have been conferred the National Award, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who began his career as a teacher, Thursday said teaching will always remain his first love.“I started my career as a teacher and teaching has always remained my first love. So I am very happy to have this opportunity to meet you, to congratulate you on the important prestigious National Awards which have been conferred on you,” said Singh, who met the awardee teachers Thursday, a day before Teachers Day.

Calling the awards a token of the country’s appreciation for their role in the nation building process, Singh said he respects the entire teaching community for their united effort to strengthen national integration, secularism and democracy.

While paying tribute to former President S. Radhakrishnan, whose birthday is celebrated as Teacher’s day every Sep 5, Singh said that keeping in mind the crucial role that education plays in the social and economic development of the country, the government has given it special attention.

“Investment in the education sector, especially in the areas of school education, has increased manifold over the last four years. It has been our effort to ensure that every section of our society gets access to education,” said Singh.
