New Delhi, March 20 (IANS) A taxi driver has been arrested for allegedly abducting and raping an eight-year-old girl in central Delhi, the police said Thursday. Bhagwan Das, 30, was arrested Wednesday from a Chanakyapuri taxi stand. He had allegedly picked up the girl from outside her Indraprastha Estate home, near ITO crossing, Monday and raped her.

The girl was later found abandoned near a subway on Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road, which connects Delhi and Gurgaon.

The police said the girl was taken to a government hospital, where doctors confirmed sexual assault.

“The girl in her statement said that the man took her to an unknown place in his car and sexually assaulted her. Some taxi-drivers were quizzed on the basis of her statement and during investigations Das was arrested,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Delhi) Alok Kumar said.

“Das, during his interrogations, has confessed to the crime,” Kumar added.
