Tamil Nadu trader robbed of gold worth Rs.5 mn

Coimbatore, Oct 15 (IANS) A 33-year-old jeweller was waylaid and robbed of gold ingots worth Rs.5 million in this Tamil Nadu city, the police said Wednesday.R. Nanda Kumar is admitted to the intensive care unit of a private hospital as he was assaulted and a corrosive liquid poured into his mouth impairing his speech.

Hailing from Maharashtra and a mainstay in the local gold ingot trade, Kumar was waylaid by a four men in an autorickshaw that attacked him with iron rods and knives.

A police official told IANS that an inside job was suspected at the behest of a few antagonised associates of Kumar. He was going to meet a financier over a deal when he was robbed.

Situated 500 km southwest of state capital Chennai, this city is known for its goldsmiths’ expertise in manufacturing intricately designed ornaments.
