Tamil Nadu to set up fisheries varsity
September 13th, 2011 - 6:25 pm ICT by IANSChennai, Sep 13 (IANS) The Tamil Nadu government has decided to set up a fisheries university in Nagapattinam district, Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa said Tuesday.
The chief minister informed the state assembly that the varsity will come up on 85 acres of land at an outlay of Rs.30 crore.
She said Nagapattinam, with a coastline of 188 km, is emerging as the hub of fishery industry, with around 9,000 fishing boats in operation.
Nagapattinam is around 300 km from here.
She said that in the first phase, five institutions will be affiliated to the proposed university and courses will include shrimp farming, fish processing and allied activities.
